Best Thermal Coffee Maker

73027.jpg

If you aren't going to get a single serve coffee machine, then a thermal coffee maker is the way to go. Hammacher Schlemmer has rated this machine the best for the taste of coffee, ease of use, and carafe heat retention.

During the heat test, this model maintained over 90% of its peak temperature four hours after brewing. Ten cups of coffee can be brewed in six minutes, and a stop and serve feature allows the carafe to be removed to pour a cup during brewing without dripping. The stainless steel carafe has a wide 3 mouth for easy cleaning and keeps brewed coffee hot for hours without cooking the liquid as is common with many hot-plate coffee makers, thereby preserving the brews original fresh taste, with panelists commenting on the nice balance and smooth aroma and taste. It has a 24-h our programmable clock/timer and a 36" cord that conveniently stores away underneath the unit. Uses #2 or #4 cone-shaped filters. 15 1/2 H x 8 3/4 W x 10 1/2 D. (5 lbs.)

Hammacher Schlemmer doesn't have the exclusive on this Zojirushi machine. Called the "Fresh Brew EC-BD15", it's been on the market for a few years. Consumer Reports (1/09) pitted it against 22 other models in the 8-12 cup carafe category. It came in 4th behind Cuisinart Brew Central, Michael Graves 40304, and Oster Counterforms 4281.
