Review: Jamie Oliver Kitchen Survival Kit

Whatisit Pans

Not enough room for your wok, fry-pan, and saucepan plus lids? We've been testing out the Jamie Oliver Survival Kit that is designed to solve this problem. The Survival Kit contains all you’ll ever need to cook most dishes in your kitchen (for us some zucchini and chicken), and it stores away in one stack - saving you loads of room in your kitchen cupboard.

The Jamie Oliver Survival Kit comes packed in an nifty box,
with loads of pictures.

Inside the Jamie Oliver Survival Kit you’ll find:

  • 26cm Wok
  • 26cm Frypan
  • 20cm Saucepan
  • 2 Glass lids, with Silicone rim (20cm & 26cm)
  • 1 Universal Handle

What did we think? Did these cooking pans hold up to the dreaded evening meal test? Did we find ourselves using them over other pots and pans after a week of testing?

About the Jamie Oliver Survival Kit

The Survival Kit is made in aluminium, for its superb heat conduction properties, and is covered in Tefal’s “Expert” non-stick coating. The thermospot tells you when the frying pan is at the correct temperature to start cooking. The glass lids have silicone knobs to ensure they stay cool. They’re oven safe and perfect for storing food in the pan after cooking. And they can be used in the oven in temperatures of up to 230 ºC.

Testing the Kit

We decided we try and use these over our more expensive pots and pans for the week. We mostly cook things like chicken and broccoli, or maybe a little meat for some tacos during the week. Nothing fancy - but we like pans that clean up easily, and also are easy to put away and store.

This is the large frypan. The red dot in the middle will
change to tell you how hot the pan is. The
handle can be removed and put on another pan or pot.

The handle attaches to the pot you want to cook with.
It's good and bad - not that easy to get on or off. We
found ourselves sticking with one pan instead of using the entire set,
though we did get better at attaching and removing the handle.

Non-stick and cooks up very nice. We like the deep
sides to the pans.

The lids of have nice vents to let off some steam.

All the pots fit inside each other into a nice stackable
bundle saving you room.

Our Conclusions

Pros:

  • The pots stack up to save space
  • The non-stick coating works great
  • The pans are well made
  • We like the deep pan sides
  • The heat dot in the middle is useful if you are wondering how hot things are

Cons:

  • The handle is hard to reattach and attach - you do get better with it
  • We wished the box came with some recipes - but you can find them on the Web site

Overall - we're going to keep using the Jamie Oliver Survival Kit. We like the range of pots and the space they save, and after a week of cooking we are having better success using the handle. The handle works great for one pot at a time, and in general, this is the method we use to cook anyways. Check out the Jamie Oliver Survival Kit, we think it's a great gift for the upcoming holiday season for a person with a small apartment or kitchen. We can also see this being an incredible pan set for your camp at the lake.
