Kitchen of the Future as Seen by Mad Men in 1962 - Kinda Meh

We found this rather interesting photo of the kitchen of the future as depicted in Arnold B. Barach's book, 1975 and the Changes to Come, from 1962. The dishwasher thing looks like a free standing kitchen accessory of what purpose we are not sure. Do those counters flip up? Oh 1975 how you never really saw a kitchen like this except in my school's cafeteria.
