Spode Christmas Tree 12-Piece Dinnerware Set
We think a little bit of nostalgia can be a powerful thing. Our grandmother had these plates and they only came out after Thanksgiving for a few special meals and of course - Christmas day dinner.
Spode Christmas Tree was originally introduced in 1938, designed specifically for the American market. It is the oldest holiday pattern in the US today, and is loved by collectors for its nostalgia and warm recollections of past Christmases. The 12 piece set which includes 4 dinner plates 10 inches, 4 salad plates 8 inches and 4 mugs 9 ounces is a great way to start collecting Spode Christmas Tree for your holiday dinners with friends and family.

Olde Thompson Nutmeg Mill
What can we say? If you need to make nutmeg you're going to have to get some nuts and a nutmeg mill. The Olde Thompson Nutmeg mill is the perfect grinder for fresh nutmeg powder every time you need it. It's made of acrylic and chrome and the mill stands approximately 4.5" high.
Nutmeg facts: nutmeg, spice consisting of the seed of the Myristica fragrans, a tropical, dioecious evergreen tree native to the Moluccas or Spice Islands of Indonesia. Nutmeg has a characteristic, pleasant fragrance and slightly warm taste; it is used to flavour many kinds of baked goods, confections, puddings, meats, sausages, sauces, vegetables, and such beverages as eggnog. Grated nutmeg has been used as a sachet; the Romans used it as incense.
Around 1600 it became important as an expensive commercial spice of the Western world and was subject of Dutch plots to keep prices high and of English and French counterplots to obtain fertile seeds for transplantation. The nutmegs sold whole were dipped in lime to prevent their growth.

Happy Thanksgiving from Kitchen Contraptions
We want to thank all of our faithful readers and make sure and check out some of our gadget coverage from this past week. We're smoking an 18lb bird that we put in the smoker at 5:30am this morning. We decided to rub it down with a little sea salt, pepper, garlic, olive oil, and some butter. We also went with smoked oyster stuffing and are now enjoying a nice cup of single serve coffee.
We'll be taking off today and tomorrow but normal operations will resume over the weekend. See you after the holiday!

Garlic Press with Slicer
Our good friend Evelyn has found this via a visit to Williams-Sonoma and just in time for Turkey day (you'll need this for the stuffing, the skin of the bird, and of course for your garlic potatoes.) Our current garlic press - well presses. But this one slices when you put the garlic cloves in the slicer area. Perfect.
Recipes often call for fresh garlic cloves to be pressed, which yields intense flavor, or thinly sliced, which results in a more subtle garlic taste. This convenient tool allows you to accomplish either task with ease – and without getting garlicky aromas on your hands. The cast-aluminum press features two compartments: one for pressing garlic, the other for slicing cloves in eight thin, uniform sections. A nonstick coating maximizes efficiency and guarantees easy cleaning. 7 3/4" long.

Good Grips Turkey Baster
Thanksgiving is right around the corner and if you aren't smoking you're turkey and have decided to use an oven - you're going to need a good baster. We like a baster with easy cleanup, good gripping surface, and a non-slip grip. OXO has created a baster with all these traits along with an oval shape that keep the baster from rolling arouind on the countertop. We like the little hole to hang them up as well because aren't we all tired of using a loop that never stays?

Smell-Away Electric Griller
Face it. You hate to smell up the house with fish every time you cook it. Now - I will say I do love to smell salmon cooking with olive oil and a little garlic - but not every time. I think the Smell Away could have a place among other kitchen contraptions as long as the taste isn't taken away as well.
With the Smell-Away electric griller, you not only cook without the horrible smells, you cook well. Fish is one of the best high-protein, low-fat foods we can consume. Yet that fishy smell too often prevents us from enjoying cod, yellowtail, trout, tuna, or any other delicacy from the sea. With the Smell-Away electric fish griller, you can cook seafood like a pro and not leave your kitchen smelling like a tuna boat.
The pungency that comes with garlic, liver, onions and just about every other offensive-smelling delicacy? Gone. Never again fear serving a favorite dish that stinks and would drive guests to search for fresh air outdoors and eat elsewhere. High nutrition, favorable aroma. Every time. Perfect for the family gourmet. Once you try it, you'll be hooked.

Thermal Brew Coffee Maker
We've seen this in the Black & Decker VB100 Vacuum Brew but we have yet to try this with a more classic vacuum brewer. It's interesting to note the process of making coffee this way has been a fixture in Japanese and Scandinavian homes for over 40 years.
"Upside-down" vacuum brewing separates coffee from grounds for clean, exquisite taste. The coffee maker works like this: water is held in the lower portion of the coffee pot and the coffee grounds are placed in the upper pot. When the water begins to boil, the vacuum process causes it to rise up through the tube to mix with the coffee grounds. The newly brewed coffee runs back down to the lower pot ready-to-serve, while the grounds stay in the upper pot. Makes 5 cups.

For clean, clear, flavorful brew in about 4 minutes, the manual drip can't be beat. Aerolatte French Press Travel Mug
We have been scouring the web for more travel mug options. Though we love our single serve coffee, a nice french pressed cup of coffee is always a welcome treat. We think the Aerolatte could be a welcome addition to the Kitchen Contraptions arsenal of travel mugs.
The Aerolatte Travel coffee press performs several functions at the same time. First, it brews coffee with a simple plunger action like a French press. Secondly, it has a tight-fitting lid with a no-spill drinking aperture for taking coffee on the road. Lastly, its insulated walls act like a thermos to keep coffee hot.
The Aerolatte Travel coffee press is made from brushed stainless steel with a sturdy foot, lid, and handle. Its double-thick walls are insulated to keep coffee hot with a swiveling lid cover that opens for sipping and also helps conserve heat. A rubber seal around the edge of the plunger screen keeps sediment out of coffee. When not in use, the plunger handle lies almost flush to the lid.

Kitchen Pencil Sharpener & Stapler
It's rare you come across such a perfect match for a kitchen pencil sharpener. Our current kitchen pencil sharpener resides in our "junk drawer" but we think this pencil sharpener from UncommonGoods could be right out there next to the stove it looks so good. Reminiscent of a coffee grinder, the hand polished chrome pencil sharpener and stapler is a work of art when it comes to sharpening pencils. Now we don't do much stapling in the kitchen but it's a set - what can you do? Oh we know - use the stapler in our home office!
At the end of the Spanish Civil War in 1939, a former firearms maker converted its facilities – and precise expertise – to produce desk accessories. Hand polished six times with six different granulations, then plated with chrome, these accessories are built for a lifetime of constant use and guaranteed forever. The pencil sharpener has an adjustable entry for any width tip and a handy crank device that easily locks down on a desk for stability. And the stapler is the only one in the world to staple three ways – the standard staple, tacking, which fastens papers to bulletin boards or walls, and pinning, a rare method that fastens papers securely and yet allows you to remove the staple with ease. Manufactured and hand finished in Spain.

Nigella Lawson 3ltr Storage Jar
It takes two people to design a decent storage jar these days. This cool duck egg blue storage jar is designed by Nigella Lawson with Sebastian Conran. The amphora form can be used in an upright or tilted position. A glass lid allows at-a-glance identification of contents. We're not exactly sure why it took 2 designers to pull this off - but we do really like it.

Aerolatte Milk Frother
We love to froth our milk. We simply take a shot or two of skim milk, nuke it in the microwave for 34 seconds, and then froth away. The Aerolatte Milk Frother is the next generation of milk frothers with a satin finish; no pumping, no propellers and definitely no steam. The Aerolatte's innovative whisk head takes just 30 seconds to whisk milk into rich, thick foam. So if you add the microwave, and then the froth - it's about 1 minute for great cappuccino without having to heat up your espresso machine frother and much less mess, and it even includes batteries.

Ramen Noodle Cup Timer
What's not to love about a burner with no burn? Perfect ramen noodles - that's what! Odd things from Japan has found the only Ramen noodle timer we know of in existence.
This kitchen burner-shaped device is an "Instant Noodles Timer". Once you poured the boiling water, you place the cup on the timer, which automatically shows a red light on. Then you turn the handle into either 3 or 4 minutes and wait (since we are in Japan though, I think there should be options like "3 minutes and 6 seconds"). When the time has passed, you'll hear a chime announcing that your noodles are ready.I wondered if people really purchased this, and found out that it was very popular, to the extent that it was the top product in July. I also investigated if it could be used for other purposes but ... nope, it's only for cup noodles!
