Cooking with Magnets - An Intro to Induction Cooking

Gizmodo has been running a set of features on different types of cooking methods, and one that caught our eye is the induction article. We've long been fascinated with this cooking method because instead of using a flame like gas, or radiant heat like standard electric burners, induction burners use a magnetic field. Yep - that's right MAGNETS. Current passing through conductive material generates heat instead of flame or electricity heating up a burner. Check it out - it's an amazing read.

Review: Weber Genesis Special Edition EP-310 Propane Gas Grill
We recently upgraded this Summer from our Weber Q 200 gas grill when we finally got the Kitchen Contraptions porch upgraded and made a bit larger to accommodate seating and most of all a larger grill. After much deliberation we went with the Weber Genesis Special Edition EP-310 Propane Gas Grill. We loved the look of the grill right away, and we knew we could get the Weber rotisserie attachment for it, along with the Special Edition Genesis having some improvements in the drip tray area and other niceties like a built in gas gauge.
Weber Genesis Special Edition EP-310 Propane Gas Grill Features:
- 637 sq. in. cooking space
- 42K BTUs
- 3 stainless steel burners
- Porcelain lid with stainless steel trim
- 7MM stainless steel rod cooking grates (we chose not to use these and buy additional cast iron grates from Weber - as we prefer that surface and the way it seasons the bars)
- Stainless steel flavorizer bars
- Stainless steel wire warming rack
- Electronic ignition
- Stainless steel working surface
- Tank not included
- Color we chose was Black
One thing as noted above, we didn't use the stainless steel cooking grates, but instead decided to get an additional set of the cast iron grates to cook on. We haven't liked stainless steel cooking grates when we've used them, and this was our decision. We like the way the cast iron grates season, and we just like the look as well.

Singular Block Knives Stay Together with Magnets

Aaron Root's concept for J.A. Henkle consists of a knife in a single wooden block, that has magnets on the side so you can pick the knives you want an fit them together into a larger uber knife block. You could also use the magnets to attach the knives to a larger metal surface.

Cuisinart PerfecTemp Porcelain Enameled Teakettles with Temperature Gauge

We've had several readers write in to tell us about this perfect tea kettle. This tea kettle features perfect temperature control, and a precise temperature gauge that is multi-colored and easy to read. The temperature gauge indicates the correct water temperature to provide the ideal cup of tea or coffee. We also like the energy saving design as it reduces unnecessary boiling or re-boiling by always knowing the exact water temperature. This kettle also features a whistling sound which signals boiling water.

Coleman 54-Quart Steel Belted Chest Cooler - Best Coolers

Having just returned from a week long vacation at the beach, we saw a lot of cooler action. One thing we found both fascinating, and annoying was SUVs that don't have enough room in them to actually fit a cooler, so they tow it on a platform behind the SUV. Go figure. Well - we think if they want the ultimate cooler instead of one of those plastic deals they should get this 54-quart steel-belted cooler with stainless-steel lid, case, and hardware. The cooler pays tribute to original Coleman design first launched in 1954, and the sturdy stainless-steel handles feature rubber comfort grips for transport. It even has a rust-resistant drain

Victorinox Cutlery 7-Inch Granton Edge Santoku Knife

Lately we've been obsessed with replacing our kitchen knives. We really love any of our Japanese-style cook knives, and this 7-inch Japanese-style cook's knife is designed for chopping, slicing, dicing. It features alternating hollows on the blade's sides to prevent food from clinging, and is made from stamped from stain-resistant, high-carbon steel that can be resharpened over and over. Really - we just love how they mow through any vegetables we prep, and the flat blade looks really cool.

The Coffee Hourglass Brewer - Brew Cold and Slow

This is the coffee maker that brews with cold water to reduce the acid in coffee by 69.6%, producing rich, flavorful coffee. Independent laboratory tests confirm the hourglass significantly reduces the acidic compounds and tannic acids in coffee that can cause heartburn and create bitter tastes.
Cold brewing produces a concentrated coffee extract that retains flavor-enhancing essential oils that are lost when coffee beans are exposed to heat. The hourglass does not require any electricity; simply combine 2 1/4 cups of coarsely ground coffee beans with 3 1/2 cups of water in the brewing chamber and allow the coffee to infuse with the water for 12 to 24 hours. When the infusion process is complete, turn the hourglass over and 16 oz. of extract instantly drains through a reusable stainless steel filter and into the extract chamber.

Sanyo SAC-MST6 Coffee/Tea Maker with Built-In Grinder

We love the design of this coffee maker because it reminds us of Blade Runner. We're pretty sure this was in the apartment of Harrison Ford's character, and probably was designed by Syd Mead. This 6-cup coffee/tea maker comes with a charcoal filter for fresh taste, and features a built-in coffee-bean grinder. It even has a specially designed tea basket, and keep-warm function.
