MacGourmet for iPhone and iPod Touch and OSX

iPhone-Background.jpg

Periodically we check in on one of our favorite recipe applications for Mac OS X and iPhone. MacGourmet is our recipe database of choice, and we think the iPhone version is the bomb. There's even a much rumored iPad version in the works too.

You'll want to get the MacGourmet full application too (now version 2), as MacGourmet helps you create and edit your recipes, wine notes and cooking notes, easily browse your entire collection and build your own custom lists for categories like appetizers or desserts.

iPhone and iPod Touch features:

  • Sync your data with MacGourmet
  • Carry your recipes
  • Carry your shopping lists
  • Build and modify shopping lists on the fly
  • Check off items as you add them to your cart
  • Carry your wine notes and cooking notes
  • Comes with over 200 recipes (great if you can't use MacGourmet or just want a nice collection of recipes for your iPhone)

MacGourmet for iPhone and iPod Touch

iPhone-Background.jpg

We love MacGourmet for our recipe Macbook in the Kitchen Contraptions test kitchen, and we've just gotten word a portable version is available for iPhone (we have 2) and iPod touch. You'll need a copy of MacGourmet to use it, but the App is free to use as long as you have MacGourmet. The big thing for us that's exciting - take our recipes with us to Whole Foods and not have to write it down, print it out, and have all the ingredients listed on our shopping list - right there on our iPhone or iPod touch. Awesome.

It allows you to sync your data with MacGourmet and the following goodness:

  • Carry your recipes
  • Carry your shopping lists
  • Build and modify shopping lists on the fly
  • Check off items as you add them to your cart
  • Carry your wine notes and cooking notes
  • Comes with over 200 recipes (great if you can't use MacGourmet or just want a nice collection of recipes for your iPhone)

Homebase Kitchen Digital Message Center and Picture Frame

514xF9iUWUL._SL500_AA280_.jpg

We've been looking into getting something for the fridge that is both useful, and gets rid of some of the picture clutter on the it as well. The Audiovox Electronics Homebase DPF710K Digital Message Center & Picture Frame tries to do both - it combines an LCD Picture frame with a digital voice recording message center. The 7-inch LCD digital picture frame, with enough memory to hold over 125 high resolution pictures, is wrapped within an erasable white board, with a magnetic border for notes, coupons, and more. There's even a little slot for a Post-it pad. The Homebase also features a built-in microphone, for recording voice messages. This item can be mounted on the wall or fridge and includes counter top mounting brackets.

Chip Chick has a great review on the various pros and cons of the Homebase. Overall they liked it, but found the fact you had to sync up your pictures via USB was a bit of a drag.

Digital picture frames are all the rage, so how about one for the fridge? Audiovox has created a digital messaging center, which has a 7-inch LCD display that holds about 100 images in onboard memory and up to 500 by plugging in a memory card.. The messaging center also includes a white board and a video camera for personal messages.

Culinary Computing - A Macbook for Every Kitchen

We recently have been on a tear to consolidate our recipes and simplify our kitchen. The result is using MacGourmet and a shiny new Macbook for recipes and also just browsing the web for kitchen stuff in the kitchen. You'll need to make sure you have a wireless connection with just about any wireless network hub, and then you're good to go. The Macbook (we prefer glossy white over the black), just picks up the signal and you're off to the kitchen computing races. Make sure and pick up a copy of MacGourmet - you can do more than just kitchen recipes, you can also pair wine with your culinary creations using it.

The iTunes of Recipes - MacGourmet

Macgourmet Icon 128X128If you've got an Apple computer and OSX we think you'll need MacGourmet. We've been using it for over a year now in the kitchen on our Apple PowerBook and find it without equal when it comes to organizing our recipes. There's even a cook viewing mode that makes the recipe full screen and large when cooking. We also love the ability to organize and pair wines with all of our recipes with the linking feature. Amazing application and it's a total steal at $24.95.

Screenshot BigYou organize your digital photos, you make playlists of your mp3s. Now bring your recipe organization into the 21st century with MacGourmet™. Think of MacGourmet as "iTunes for recipes." MacGourmet helps you create and edit recipes, wine notes and cooking notes, easily browse your entire collection and build your own custom lists for categories like appetizers or desserts.

In addition to recipes, MacGourmet lets you save notes and labels for wines you've had, creating a digital "wine scrapbook." Had a great wine that would go well with a certain recipe? MacGourmet lets you make a relationship between them. In fact, make one or many relationships between every kind of recipe box item.

And like your wine notes, you can keep lists of your cooking notes, those nuggets of wisdom that are general and not necessarily specific to any one recipe or wine.

Bluetooth Wine Collector 150

Winegroup2We love our wine and love to know what's in our wine collection. Typically we really want to know what we've had for wine and whether or not we've liked it. The Wine Collector 150 is for the person who's serious about their wine collection.

The machine uses Bluetooth wireless technology to allow you to scan the retail barcode on the label of your bottles for automatic identification of the name, varietal, winery, country, type, color, region, and more. Included software can automatically calculate optimal maturity periods, print detailed reports, and lets you add your own custom ratings. When you've finished the bottle, just scan it again to take it off the list.

Polaroid Under-Cabinet 10" LCD TV/DVD Combo

Okay - so we return from vacation with a LCD TV for your kitchen, and you might say - what? Well, our vacation TV situation was limited, which in the end, was a very good thing. We managed to have 6 days on the beach with near perfect weather. However, each night making dinner I would have loved to have a little TV viewing pleasure while we prepped things, chatted, or even put on a Friday the 13th to laugh at.

The Pioneer FDM-1000A LCD TV DVD/TV Combo for under your cabinets, allows you to watch your favorite DVDs, the news, or just listen to the radio in the kitchen. The FDM-1000A has a 10-inch color LCD screen with a 16-to-nine aspect ratio that gives you a beautiful and sharp color picture. The LCD screen swivels up to 180 degrees so you can view it easily from almost any angle in the room, and the screen folds flat for convenient storage when it's not in use. The FDM-1000A plays DVD, DVD-R/RW, and DVD+R/RW DVD discs, as well as music CDs and CD-R/RW discs. And for those of you with digital pictures, this unit is JPEG-image compatible as well.
