Ginsu 2-Piece Stainless Steel Santoku Knife Set

31c6EkESQpL._SL500_AA300_.jpg

This set of Japanese-style cook's knives are designed for mincing, dicing and slicing. The blades are made of commercial quality, high carbon, Japanese stainless steel, and the traditional Kullens grind on blade helps to prevent food from sticking (trust us - vegetables and meat just slide off). The stainless handles are built for extreme strength and durability, and you can expect a long use out of the durable double serrated edges on each knife.

MacBook Air is also a Kitchen Knife

t1larg.macbook.knife.youtube.jpg

Well - we've know seen just about everything when you use a Macbook Air as a kitchen knife. CNN has pictures and video of yes - a Macbook Air being used to hack up carrots, apples, baby corn, mushrooms and even shrimp. Videos are here and of course you can read more over at CNN.com.

You know for $1199 or $999 maybe we just aren't spending enough on our kitchen knives, and maybe they're just not that great anyways because they don't do email, web, and run iTunes. :-)

Colorful Knives in See Through Knife Block

p3571_main.jpg

Taylor's Coloured Kitchen Knife Block is a thing of beauty. The five knives sit suspended in a acrylic see through knife block. We love the color variety, and the only issue we could see was not keeping your knife block clean and this looking less than see through, but that could also be a plus because you'll know the interior of your knife block is a bit dirty. Whatever the case you'll get the following knives with this killer block:

  • Purple chefs knife 19cm
  • Pink bread knife 19cm
  • Blue carving knife 19cm
  • Orange all purpose knife 13cm
  • Green paring knife 9cm

Kuhn Rikon's Farmers Market Knives make Fresh Impression

kuhn_rikon_fresh_knife.jpg

Kuhn Rikon has a new set of farmers market knives that feature fresh colors, and interesting patterns on the knife blades. Coming in Red, Purple, Orange, and Green each knife has a different vegetable inspired design on the blade. The blade is made from razor-sharp Japanese carbon stainless steel. We used the red knife that Kuhn Rikon sent us this morning to prep our kids lunches and the knife worked great. It also comes with a sheath. The sheath makes the knife perfect to take along on picnics and outings.

Pure Komachi 2 Series 6-1/2-Inch Hollow Ground Santoku Knife

31IVcJgqkvL._SL500_AA300_.jpg

We've been using this style of multipurpose knife because they're ideal for slicing, chopping, and mincing, and the hollow-ground edge helps reduce friction for easy slicing and releasing food from the blade. This one is made from high-carbon stainless-steel blade retains super-sharp edge over time, and the color is made by bonding food-safe FDA-approved resin to the stainless-steel blade (come on - you need a pink kitchen knife). The non-stick resin coating resists corrosion, makes cleaning simple, and helps blade glide through food with ease. We think any knife shaped like this basically makes vegetable prep a breeze.

Kuhn Rikon has sent us over both the smaller and larger version of this herb and vegetable knife. We really like the handle, and the high carbon Japanese steel is sharp. The knife also features a nonstick coating for easy food release from the utra-sharp edge. The matching sheath also helps to keep blade sharp for future use.

Review: Vicera Ceramic Knives from Japan

vicera_knives.jpg

Vicera sent us a set of their ceramic Chef's Knife, Santoku Knife, and Utility Knife to review over the past two weeks. We've been using these knives daily in our cooking, and compared to the Kyocera knives which we've been using - we simply like these knives better. They are dishwasher safe, and the white blade compared to the black ceramic blade of the Kyocera knives is much thinner and we think cuts a bit easier. We also like the handle on the Vicera knives a bit more as well - the texture on the handle makes it grippier.

These knives are not cheap, but then again when is a great knife cheap? You're going to pay on average $59-$99 for these ceramic knives, and these should be thought of - IN ADDITION TO - the knives you're using. Ceramic knives are not good for deboning or doing task where the knives could be pitted agains something hard. These knives however slice perfect slices of tomatoes and other vegetables.

You're also not going to TASTE the knife - as the ceramic leaves no metal taste to delicate fish and other foods. We really like these knives, and a big thanks to Vicera for sending them to us for review.

  • Chef's Knife - Customarily the preferred knife for most kitchen tasks, our 6-inch/ 16cm Chef’s Knife bears a classic design for general use. Made in Japan.
  • Santoku Knife - Slightly smaller than the Chef's Knife, our 5.5-inch/ 14cm Santoku Knife is designed for those who want the virtues of a Chef’s Knife but seek a finer control over its use. Made in Japan
  • Utility Knife - Our 5-inch/ 13cm Utility Knife is designed for tasks too small for a Chef’s Knife and too large for a Paring Knife. The narrow blade is perfect for quick, routine cuts such as slicing sandwiches or pastries. Made in Japan.

Kapoosh Knife Holder, Woodgrain Finish

318Zo+KMKiL._SS500_.jpg

We just got some new knives and they don't fit in our old knife block. I'm thinking we may need to get one of these. The Kapoosh knife holder holds any knife at any time without the need for special slot. It has rods that allow you to mix and match kitchen knives from different sets or store any utensils anywhere in the block. The rods are removable and dishwasher safe.
