Trash Cans & Compost

The Urbano Eco Trash Can is the winner of the 2005 Pratt Product Design Competition, and it deserves it. This recycling focused trash can allows you to store and reuse the plastic bags that you collect from shopping. Simply loop trash bags around the cut-out sides and push them all the way down. This creates a visual of stacked handles all along the side, and shows you how many bags you have left to use. When you are ready to use one, just move it up to the handles and hook so that it won't fall in on itself. Made in the USA.
We've since switched to getting either paper or using our own bags when we remember as we're not perfect. However we still get a bag or two that's plastic here or there, and right now store them in our simplehuman bag holder. This would just make more sense for the kitchen and the bathrooms instead of storing them for some possible use in the future.

Our kitchen can be a bit cramped and that's when we thought about an under counter trash can. Problem is they just sit in there and you have to put the trash in or pull it out a bit to get the job done. This kitchen trash can with a slide-out design from simplehuman uses 13-gallon standard trash bags and makes the job easy. Simply reach in and pull the can out to get to it and slide back in. The bearings that drive the track to slide it on are even commercial grade. We're not sure how easy it is to mount, but given our success with just about every simplehuman product we're thinking it's going to work just fine.

We like the clean lines of this rectangular 10-gallon waste can made of durable stainless steel from simplehuman. Our current trash can in the Kitchen Contraptions test kitchen is from simplehuman, and it's been working wonders for over 3+ years. This one opens by stepping on the solid-steel platform pedal, and features lid shox technology that uses air-suspension shocks to close the lid slowly and quietly. It also has a nonskid base, flat hinge, fingerprint-proof finish, smartbucket bag-change system, and measures 12-1/2 by 15-1/2 by 25-4/5 inches.

We've been using the Reduce Eco-Friendly Compactor Trash Can over the past month, and we are really impressed. The Reduce Trash can has a compactor top you push down to reduce the trash in the can by compacting it. Reduce? Well it's not like trash disappears but it does get reduced in size.
Reduce in the test kitchen.
We found the Reduce Eco-Friendly Compactor Trash Can top fun to push down, and if we were having a bad day a great way to ease out a little frustration. Reduce claims you'll use half as many trash bags as you would with your old trash can, and we think this is about 1/4 less. The trash can does a great job but if you smooshed down your trash before, this is a little better than that. The big pluses are not touching the trash to do the smooshing.

This countertop mini trash can with a 1.5-Liter capacity is a must for your kitchen. You can save scraps for compost, and also have it for breakfasts where guests want to get rid of those sugar packet wrappers outside. The swing-open lid helps keep contents hidden and odors contained, and the lid pulls off for easy emptying. The lined interior means no need to add a bag. We've had one for about 6+ years now and also use it for coffee pods and spent K-Cups in our coffee nook.

It's time to send your trash into orbit, and we've found this rocket shaped trash that can to do it. Made of 100% steel the Spaceboy garbage can by Wesco is the only trashcan we want to own. At $250 it arrives in the US later this year.

We love the 100% touch-free sensor operation built into this 13 gallon trashcan. You can even have battery-free operation with an optional AC Adaptor, and the trashcan fits any 13 or 18 gallon trash bags. The lid opens instantly when hand or trash is within 5 inches of its sensor (let's hope it doesn't randomly open when you walk by). This SX model has a new lid opening design for more capacity in less space.

This is a great idea. This trash bag cinch keeps trash bags secured to rim of the trash can and also works as an air freshener to freshen the air around the garbage can. The cinch is attached by adhesive to the trash can and then the top of the bag goes into the cinch. The replaceable lemon scented air freshener disk works for 30 days.
